The Mickelson Trail
Stretching for 109 miles from the Deadwood in the northern Black Hills to Edgemont in the southern Hills, the Mickelson trail takes you through the Heart of the Hills. It has been developed on an old railroad route, so the easy grades make it perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. This scenic trail takes you through pine covered mountains, aspen groves, mountain meadows, over streams, and past an old abandon mining town. Because this is an old railroad track you'll go over nearly 100 trestles, some expanding over deep gorges offer beautiful views of the streams and possible wildlife in the bottom. There are also four tunnels along the way which offer a cool break on a hot summer day.
Don't let the length of this trail scare you. It is divided into fourteen sections. Each section has a trailhead with a graveled parking area, toilets, picnic tables, and a self-pay station. (The trail is supported on the funds that it takes in from these fees. The cost is minimal. Just $2 per day, per person 12 and over, or you may purchase a yearly pass for $10.) You can travel just the portions you choose by having someone drop you off at one trailhead, and picking you up at the end of your day at your destination trailhead. If this isn't possible, you can simply turn around when you are ready and go back the way you came. The view is completely different going the other direction.
