Spearfish Chocolate Days - Spearfish, SD
An extravaganza of chocolate and the "finer things of life". Chocolates, coffees, wines, desserts, truffles, fudge, nuts, confections, cheesecakes, gourmet popcorn, caramel apples, brittles, candies, accessories, jewelry, cheese, spices, and all kinds of gift items will be available for tasting and purchasing. Live music performers, presentations on the history of chocolate, and a restaurant chocolate dessert competition will spice up the venue. This is an event that all of the region has enjoyed for years.

Open House, Custer State Park
A great way to kick off the season! No park fees will be taken during this weekend. Enjoy a free weekend at Custer State Park, beginning at 8 a.m. Friday and ending 11 p.m. Sunday. Camping fees are still required. To celebrate the beginning of the summer season, visitors can enjoy nature hikes, hayrack rides, cowboy cookouts, pancake feeds and other special events. This is also the weekend for the park’s infamous buffalo chip throwing contest. Fishing licenses are not required on SD waters during this special weekend.Custer State Park will host a free fishing derby, awarding prizes for anglers in each age group. National Trails Day - George S. Mickelson Trail, Lead, 8 AM

A 7-mile walk/run/bike from the Lead High School to the Deadwood Trailhead. The first 100 registrants get a t-shirt. Registration is $15 per person or a team of four for $45.


National Trails Day - Little Devil's Tower Trail Hike, Custer State Park, 9 AM

Little Devil's Tower is one of the highest points in the Black Hills. Hikers will pass through a spruce-pine forest, rocky terrain, then climb to the summit of a geological landscape. This hike is considered strenuous and is not recommended for people with health conditions or physical limitations. Meet at the General Store Parking Lot. National Trails Day - Prairie Trail Hike, Custer State Park, 9 AM

An easy to moderate hike on the Prairie Trail. Custer State Park offers over 18,000 acres of grassland habitat, which houses a diversity of life. Wildflowers, native grasses, and wildlife  will be discussed on this guided hike which exposes participants to the significance of the Great Plains. Meet at the Wildlife Station Visitor Center. National Trails Day - Badger Clark Trail Hike, Custer State Park, 1 PM

This is an easy one-mile hike along the Badger Clark Trail. On this hike you will learn of Badger's legacy in South Dakota and Custer State Park. Interpretive panels along the trail take visitors back to a place and time of a man who lived and shared a simple life. Meet at the Badger Hole Historic Site. Info: 605-255-4464. 8:00 AM Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, Half Marathon and 5 Person Marathon Relay
The marathon begins in Rochford and then meets up with the Mickelson Trail. It ends at the historic Engine House at the Deadwood Trailhead. Kids 1K and Fast 5K take.

Trolley on the Trail - George S. Mickelson Trail, Lead, 1 PM

The Trolley on the Trail allows people with impaired mobility to experience the Mickelson Trail. This ride will cover the trail from the Englewood Trailhead to Rochford, about four hours from start to finish. To reserve your place, please call Neighborhood Housing at 605-578-1401.

Father's Day Bluebird Box Workshop, Custer State Park, 6 PM

Held at the host site at Horsehead Campground. Join us in building bluebird boxes for the mountain bluebirds of the area. Bring a hammer and the whole family! For more information, please call 605-745-6996. A Custer State Park Entrance Fee is required.

Rapid City Triathalon

This is a Sprint Triathlon with an 800 meter snake swim in a 50 meter pool. An out and back 18 K bike on city road with some areas coned. The run is a 5k out and back run on city streets. This is a great early season triathlon for beginners and relays, but challenging enough for the experience triathlete. Nature Day Camp: Kids' Fishing Day - Belle Fourche, 9:30 AM until noon

Rocky Point Recreation Area

 

Kids will learn how to tie a fishing knot, take part in a casting contest, boat and water safety, learn some tricks for cleaning the catch, and make fish prints to take home. First Annual Dakota Mud Run - Hot Springs

This first year event is spread over a two-mile course running from the Mueller Civic Center up to Butler Park, then down to Centennial Park. The Dakota Mud Run is designed for all ages to go at their own pace and to take part in only the events they choose. Included are a military style obstacle course, mud pit, kids course and more.
