First Spring Flowers

Crocus

The snowmobile trails and downhill ski areas are now officially closed as of this last weekend, but in their place spring flowers are beginning to bloom and we can look forward to more warm weather activities. If you are outdoors, look for crocuses blooming. The one above is not native, but is still a very welcome site. The lavender crocus, or pasque flower, is South Dakota's state flower, and will often be seen coming up through the snow.

A sure sign of spring in the Black Hills

Bald Eagle

Every year about this time Bald Eagles come to the Black Hills in search of food. They stay as long as there is plenty of water, but as spring turns into summer and the seasonal creeks dry up, many of them move on. They are easy to spot, but are shy and if you try to get close, they will fly to somewhere more secluded.

If you are planning on visiting the Black Hills, be sure to visit our Events page to find out what's going on during your stay.

Warm weather brings seasonal creeks to life

Seasonal Creek in the Black Hills

The weather has been in the 50s and 60s the past week and has helped to melt a lot of snow in the lower elevations. Seasonal creeks are running again, but not too high yet. The snow in the upper elevations is melting slow enough to keep the streams within their banks.

The downhill ski areas are reporting good snow, and they should be able to stay open for at least another week, Terry Peak is hoping for two more weeks. If you are planning a trip to the Black Hills please check our Events page to find out what is happening during your stay.
